Dr. Jennie Saxe, DENIN Affiliate and Associate Professor of Environmental Engineering at the University of Delaware, was recently awarded for Outstanding Teaching in Environmental Engineering & Science by the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors Foundation.
Saxe began teaching at UD in 2017 after fourteen years with the Environmental Protection Agency. She has taught undergraduate and graduate courses on solid waste management, air pollution, sustainable engineering, and industrial ecology, often discussing the importance of stakeholder engagement and environmental justice in her lessons for emerging civil and environmental engineers. She also serves as the co-adviser of UD’s Engineers without Borders chapter, overseeing the development of sustainable infrastructure in Bolivia, Malawi, and the Philippines.
Saxe discussed her approach to teaching at the Academic Technology Services’ Tech Talk Tuesday on September 16th, detailing her approach to “getting the right tech in the right places.” She is a strong advocate for bringing the world into the classroom, incorporating discussion & debate, field trips, team exercises, campus-based learning, and situational roleplaying into her instruction.
We congratulate Dr. Saxe on these recognitions, which are greatly emblematic of her efforts to create a meaningful education for future environmental engineers.
